One of the simplest ways to get out on the water with friends and family is to charter a yacht.
Here are out Top Locations:
1) Whitsundays, Queensland, Australia
Situated within the Great Barrier Reef is the Whitsunday Islands. Most charter operations start at Airlie Beach and after a short orientation, leave you to enjoy your time in the Islands. Although there may be a short quiz to check your competency aboard, you can rest assured that the yachts are set up really simply and anyone is capable of sailing in this beautiful body of water.
This is one area that I can speak personally about, having chartered a yacht in the Whitsundays along with my wife, my sister and her husband (along with 2 young children). We had a fantastic time despite the high winds limiting the range of sailing that we could explore. This really didn’t bother us as we were happy to see all the new places that were within the protected waters and maybe if we were returning year after year we would feel shortchanged at not being able to return to our favorite locations.
Here are some quick statistics on the Whitsundays:
- Coordinates – 20°18′S 148°56′E
- Number of Islands – 72
2) New Caledonia
This is the most understated location for yacht charter with a world class location mixed with a the flavor of the French Riviera. Noumea, as the capital has a well known harbour used extensively by the Allied Navies during World War II. Once out of the harbour you will find yourself within a lagoon that extends for over 23,000kms and is listed as a World Heritage Site with UNESCO.
We sailed into New Caledonia from Vanuatu in 2007 and despite spending most of our time chasing a propeller, we were blown away by the cultural extremes we found on a small island so close to Australia. We literally felt that we had stepped into Europe, not the South Pacific, and wished that we were not enroute to Australia but free to stay and enjoy the culture and climate of New Caledonia.
